The Pasadena Kid

Hello, my name is Anita, and I am writing to gofundme to raise money for my brother Joey Olivera. My brother runs a private gym, for young boys and girls, he charges them a $20 a month for dues. (If they can afford it)
The dues help with the costs to run the gym and for purchasing of additional boxing and training equipment. Our Mother had a gym built for him in our backyard. It was her way of keeping him at the house to be close and near her. Instead of going to the other gyms to work out with the kids.

Our Mother was a Lung Cancer patient, and fought the hard battle. I was her caregiver, and took her to all of the appointments, as well as take care of the house, and work full time. Then part time, till I had to quit and take care of her full time. We loss her the end of last year.

My brother’s trainer, Canto Robledo also from Pasadena. Was the only blind boxing trainer in the world. He helped my brother get off the streets, and from becoming a gang member. With hard work & Canto’s excellent training, he took my brother under his wing, & he became the “The Pasadena Kid” & won the title “California Lightweight Champion of 1987”

He is now paying it forward, helping the kids in our neighborhood by teaching them boxing, confidence, courage, commitments, achievements, good attitudes, honor, teamwork and honesty.
One of his boxers, who has been with him for over 10 years now, and is now family. “Carlos Morales”, won the title NABA Super Featherweight Champion. The money would be used to help save the house we have lived in since 1969. We will have bedrooms for some of the young men and women who need a place to live. Where and if they need a place to get back on their feet, or a place to stay and help with the training so they too someday can pay it forward.

It would be an honor if I could help my brother and save our Mother’s home. I have been taking care of the house and yard, so that we can increase the training to women and seniors who would like to work out with their children, grandchildren or just to stay in shape, or to lose weight. A lot of seniors, who need to have physical activity, just don’t get out of the house. Think of the fun grandparents will have, spending time with their grandchildren, and everyone stays in shape.  At our gym, we will pick you up or come to you if needed. Just ask!

It will be a place where children, young adults, & seniors can come to a safe place, where they can be themselves, no pressure of bullying. Where everyone helps each other, where they can built teamwork, life long friendships, & someday pass it on to the next generation of young people.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Anita Haas
